Home Strategy Experiments in Planeswalking: 2 Dream Puppets failures and a new side series

Remember that time I tried to put Dream Puppets together, even though I was absolutely wasted?

I hope you do, because I sure as hell don’t.

With all the tournament stuff out of the way, I thought I’d jump back into the deck and see just how all my alcohol-induced planning actually panned out. I think the title of the article speaks for itself, but rest assured: I’m already working on a much better variant.

This Magic Moment

While you’re at it, take a minute to check out the first video in a new side series, This Magic Moment. While I’ll still do full-match videos, there are so many times when something really cool happens in an otherwise boring match. These videos will highlight those kinds of events in much briefer analyses of what’s going on, why, and how you can learn from it to level up your game. Or “improve” your game, as the kids say these days.

  1. You have a lot of wasted cards in deck, you should either go mill speed deck or ……. frankly not play the deck lol. When i have time i will put up my deck list. For me it is my most powerful and most reliably winning deck.

  2. My version Speed Mill-
    1 Grindstone
    2 Hedron Crab
    4 Jace’s Phantasm
    1 Prosperity
    3 Thought Scour
    2 Tome Scour
    2 Unsummon
    2 Visions of beyond
    2 Counterspell
    2 Howling mine
    2 Jace’s Erasure
    3 Mind Sculpt
    2 Sappire Medallion
    1 Crippling Chill
1 Sword of body and mind
    2 Dreamborn muse
    1 Sleep
    1 Archive trap
    2 Traumatize

Please let me know how it works for you.

  3. Draw-go pls

    Phantasms
    Counterspells and Dream Fracture
    Every cantrip
    Into the roils
    Swords
    Mind Sculpts
    Aether Adepts
    Telemin Performances
    Chancellors
    Mind Controls
    Sleep
    Body Double
    Clones

  4. The deck just isn’t very good because it has too many poor matchups. I’d say the most important cards in the deck are the Dreamborn Muses, Jace’s Erasure and Prosperity. WIth all three, you can drop a massive bomb on your opponent. I think the pure mill cards like Tome Scour and Mind Sculpt are uninteresting and not all that necessary.

    Here’s what I’ve got now:
    2x Hedron Crab
2x Jace’s Phantasm (because I’ve built the deck so that I won’t be milling a lot until at least turn 5/6, it’s difficult to activate the Phantasms and so I’m not sure I want to use them)
    2x Prosperity
    3x Thought Scour
    2x Unsummon
3x Visions of Beyond (again, it’s going to take a while until I can draw 3 but they’re necessary to make sure you don’t run out of steam)
    2x Counterspell
    2x Howling Mine
    2x Into the Roil
2x Jace’s Erasure (I wish they added another in the promo cards)
    2x Aether Adept
    3x Crippling Chill
    1x Dream Fracture
2x Clone (great for getting another Muse out)
    3x Dreamborn Muse
    1x Sleep
1x Traumatize (I know I said I don’t like pure mill cards, but this is sometimes worth it. I only play one rather than two.)
1x Forced Fruition (I am still totally unsure about this one. I haven’t put in a lot of testing with it.)

I would say the biggest cut I’ve made is Mind Control. I’m still trying to decide if I want to play two of them instead of two Phantasms. Removing a creature from the opponent’s side is very useful, but I hate when I have to grab them tapped.

  5. You’re 100% awesome Wing :)

I still say Puppets is the crappiest deck in this year by far…but that makes winning with it so amusing! That said, the number of try-hards using this deck without the serious skills you need to even get it off the ground…I enjoy curb-stomping them back to aggro.

  6. WiNG, dig your vids and articles…funny shit.

Dream puppets is fun as hell, though tough to play with with. I don’t think it’s the worst deck (would have to be celestial light), but it’s pretty much auto loss against gobs.
    Here’s what I got:

    2 crabs
    3 phantasms
    3 thought scour
    2 unsummon
    2 visions of beyond
    2 counterspell
    2 into the roil
    2 sapphire medallion
    2 aether adept
    3 crippling blight
    dream fracture
    stroke of genius
    2 swords
    clone
    sleep
    2 vedalken entrancer
    2 body double
    scalpelexis
    2 chancellor

I tried a bunch of builds (straight mill, little to no mill) until I found the right balance of creatures, stall and mill. There’s still room for improvement, so suggestions/feedback would be appreciated.
