In ACR, does anyone know for sure if the volume or pattern of the whispers give any particular indications of where your pursuer is?

Do they increase in volume when he’s near you? In line of sight? In front/behind? Or is the volume just perceived as changing because the music changes?

Do they change when more than one pursuer is near you?

The volume does increase as they get closer. Line of sight has no effect on the whispers. They don’t give any indication of your pursuer’s position (above, behind, in front) only their proximity to you. Also not affected by how many pursuers are near you.

I may be wrong, but that’s my experience.

This matches my observations. Although the volume increase is, I personally have found, so little that it does not pay off using the whispers as a proximity indicator and you should rather pay off.

What I’d like to know would be if the volume increase is based on XY-distance or actual radial distance (That means, if it includes height differences in the distance or treats the map like flat.

It seems to me that there is a VERY set distance where the Whispers kick in, and another level or two where they get louder. I don’t think it’s wholly analog. Might be worth testing.

I think the whispers are biaxial. That’s based on frequently getting roofed and thinking, “Yeeeah. Nice whispers there.”

I have wondered if being low profile / in a blend group affects whispers at all. It seems to me it would go a long way to encouraging stealthy gameplay.

Scratch that: We don’t need any more reasons to not be able to hear the whispers over that way-too-loud[-at-times] background music (that is bound to the same damn channel as the whispers Imeansrslywtf!?).

Well, I think the reason why the whispers is bound to another audio channel is to prevent people from disabling the music just to have that advantage of hearing the whispers more easily. The music adds a nice ambiance, and just disabling that to get that edge I think defeats the immersion of hunt-and-be-hunted; you’re playing to just beat everyone out rather than enjoying the thrill of the chase.

On that note, are the whisper ranges the same in all modes? It’s a tad annoying sometimes in Deathmatch when you hear whispers all the time since you’re bound to be near your pursuer due to the fact that the maps are quite small.

Ok, I’m pretty sure now that the whispers are just a binary thing: on or off, with a short ramp up/down when they start or stop. The volume changes randomly, just based on what part of the sound file you’re hearing and how loud the music is.

I’ve heard them full blast from max range, and I’ve had them barely audible while someone casually walked up to stab me
