IPW: “We moved the numbers into different boxes.”

May 19, 2010 3 Comments by

After the initial discussion over the original iPlayWinner Super Street Fighter 4 tier list, Haunts has posted a new tier list with significantly fewer head-scratching results. This new list, part of an initiative to use “Match Up Consultants” to crunch numbers every month, now places the Super Street Fighter IV roster into 6 tiers (though I can’t figure out why there isn’t a C+ tier). As we saw in both the original IPW and the JPN Wiki list, familiar faces populate both the top shelf and the bottom floor.

Here Comes A New Challenger!

Less than half a week after the release of iPlayWinner’s preliminary Super Street Fighter 4 tier list, Eventhubs has provided its own list, courtesy of a Japanese SF Wiki.

As I stated before, it’s hard to definitively say if any character rankings are right or wrong this early in the game, but my initial flash judgment (not that that carries any real weight) is that this list from the Far East is a little less unbelievable.

Unofficial Official Super Street Fighter IV Tier List: FAIL?

May 14, 2010 10 Comments by

iPlayWinner.com has just released its first Super Street Fighter 4 tier list, and by all reasonable estimates, the list is complete and utter guttertrash.

According to IPW, the list was composed by polling the top SSF4 players in the country. But even the most casual of players could probably tell the damn thing doesn’t make any sense. While this is no surprise (as accurate tier lists typically take months or years to come together), I applaud IPW for having the audacity to thoroughly and shamelessly humiliate themselves with this awful compilation.

Top Tier Taunting: Mocking your way to victory

May 10, 2010 3 Comments by

Whether you’re playing Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Team Fortress 2, or IRL tennis, there comes a time when your victory is so assured that there stands before you no reasonable option other than to taunt your opponent. After all, if you don’t perform a taunt, how will your adversary ever know that he or she is too slow, too dumb, or too poor and Irish to ever stand a chance at defeating you?

SSF4 Dash speed frame data revealed

May 05, 2010 3 Comments by

Although I have always understood that some characters have faster walks and dashes than others, it hadn’t particularly occurred to me that these dash speeds give those fighters different frame advantage/disadvantage following a blocked focus attack. Often I would get frustrated watching Ryu apply easy pressure by following a blocked focus attack with a forward dash, while my attempts to do so with Vega often failed miserably. Ryu’s dashes led to simple mixups: throws, high attacks, low attacks… or just LP shoryuken spam. My dashes led to watching Vega get pummeled.

It appears the rumors were guttertrash

Despite many a worry that our favorite gentleman boxer would be vastly overpowered, Super Street Fighter 4 is out and it appears Dudley isn’t nearly as broken, overpowered, or S-tier as everyone had feared.

Screw the formalities, it’s time for Sagat rage

Apr 15, 2010 4 Comments by

What exactly was the thinking behind giving Sagat a time-stopping normal-cancellable power-up move that can link anything into Ultra? Previously, Sagat had easy links to Ultra using Focus Attack Dash Cancel (FADC). This takes 1/2 the EX meter to do the same thing. And it pauses time.
